2009 Leaders Report

It’s been another busy and successful year in the Cub pack. We started the year with 31 members and, despite promoting some to scouts and only taking new members from the Beaver colony, ended the year with 37 members! It has meant that throughout the year we have had to rethink how we go about organising activities on a week-to-week basis - partly to ensure that everybody gets a turn on each activity and partly to make the most of any resources. We have also been blessed with two new leaders this year: Jess Urwin and Paul Baggott, as well as Sam Foxton, undertaking his Duke of Edinburgh Award. In the autumn term we revisited the Promise challenge to remind all of us about how and why the scout movement came about. We also took part in themed activities around the time of Halloween and Bonfire Night. Several members attended the District Shooting day at the beginning of November. In the spring term we split activities up and delivered them over several weeks.

 All cubs had the opportunity to make circuits, consider their personal safety and cook a two course meal with Robert. We also spent an evening at Hinckley fire Station finding out about the work they do. At the end of term 26 of us went on a PGL Activity weekend in Ross-on-Wye, which was a fabulous experience. Plans are already afoot for next year’s Easter activity! Thanks to Helen Guest who also came along and helped – a fist of friendship indeed. This summer we all tried to gain the Athlete badge, some of us with more success than others. We have also built, painted and planted a windowbox and key holder to gain our DIY badge. Many of us took part in the Burbage Carnival procession and, the week before, the older members had the opportunity to attend the annual County Cub Camp at Oaks in Charnwood. The weather was beautiful and we had a wonderful time. By the time you read this we will already have taken part in ‘Pete’s Pack Camp’ at the end of August and have started a new year of fun and exciting activities. Yours in Scouting (Cub Leader & team)
